‘Sad!’: Trump goes after ‘so-called angry crowds’ in GOP districts

President Trump took to Twitter Tuesday to give his take on the unrest seen at town hall events across the U.S., citing “so-called angry crowds” that he said are, in many cases, “planned out by liberal activists.”

“The so-called angry crowds in home districts of some Republicans are actually, in numerous cases, planned out by liberal activists. Sad!” Trump tweeted.

Angry constituents swarmed town halls expressing concerns about the administration’s policies on everything from immigration and health care to public lands.

Fox News aired a segment on its 6 p.m. show – just before the president’s tweet — in which Peter Doocy reported that “some of the chaos from GOP town hall meetings is very well-choreographed by the liberal activists that helped get Barack Obama elected president.”

Specifically, Doocy said the non-profit group organizing for Action is “giving liberals turn-by-turn directions for disrupting Republican lawmakers who want to repeal Obama care.”

Trump is not the first Republican politician to dismiss the crowds as the work of “liberal activists.”

Republican Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said many people who confronted him at a town hall earlier this month were outside agitators from other states. He also told the Deseret News it was “more of a paid attempt to bully and intimidate” than an accurate reflection of the concerns of his constituents.

Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., held a town hall by conference call rather than risk an in-person appearance because “recent town hall meetings across the country have devolved into unproductive shouting matches, with highly-organized, partisan special interest groups effectively hijacking the forums and crowding out local residents who want respectful discourse.”
